Celebrating a Legacy of Service
Please consider making a donation in honor of Father Chuck Canterna!

On Saturday, March 22nd, Dismas Ministry hosted the annual St. Dismas Award Celebration, a day filled with gratitude, inspiration, and faith. This year, we were honored to recognize Father Chuck Canterna, whose 40 plus years of dedicated prison ministry have left an indelible mark on countless lives—both within prison walls and in the broader community.
A Vibrant Celebration of Faith and Service
More than 200 people gathered in support and celebration, a testament to the powerful impact Father Chuck has had throughout his decades of service. The Mass was concelebrated by seven priests—dear colleagues and companions in ministry—whose presence reflected the deep respect and admiration shared across the Catholic and prison ministry communities.
A special thank you to Father Leo’s Plating Grace Catering, whose delicious meal was not only memorable but meaningful. Plating Grace provides job opportunities, skills training, and personal growth for returning citizens and individuals from disadvantaged communities. Their mission, much like ours, is rooted in redemption, dignity, and hope—and their presence elevated the entire event.
Heartfelt Thanks to Our Volunteers
We extend sincere gratitude to the volunteers who helped make the day a success. From St. Vincent de Paul: Judy, Peggy, and Theresa; and from our own parish: Tony, Nathan, and Colleen—thank you for your behind-the-scenes dedication and generous service.
Moments of Tribute and Inspiration
The celebration was filled with moving tributes that highlighted Father Chuck’s humble yet powerful journey. Charlie Ponticelli, who nominated Father Chuck for this honor, shared compelling stories that reflected the real-world impact of his ministry. John Canterna, Father Chuck’s brother, offered heartfelt reflections from their early life and spoke about the transformation that occurred in Father Chuck—and through him, in so many others.
Chris Patrick, Dismas Ministry board member and deacon-in-formation, presented the award on behalf of Father Fred, who was unable to attend. Chris’s words beautifully underscored Father Chuck’s unwavering commitment to serving those who are often forgotten by society.
Continuing the Mission
This celebration was not only a tribute to one man’s legacy—it was a call to continue the work. We invite all who were moved by the spirit of the day to consider making a donation in honor of Father Chuck Canterna. Your generosity directly supports Dismas Ministry’s mission to bring faith, hope, and healing to our brothers and sisters impacted by incarceration.
Stay Connected
If you weren’t able to attend or simply want to relive the special moments, we’ll soon be sharing professional photos on our Facebook, Instagram, and website. We encourage you to follow along, share your thoughts, and help us spread the word about the vital work being done through Dismas Ministry.
To all who joined us in celebrating this year’s St. Dismas Award, thank you. Your presence, support, and prayers help amplify our mission and reflect the same spirit of compassion and service that Father Chuck has embodied throughout his remarkable ministry.
